Adult BJJ questions.
New to the mats? These are the questions we hear most from adults starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Winnipeg.
Do I need any experience to start BJJ as an adult?
No. Most of our adult members start as complete beginners with no martial arts or fitness background. Every class has a structured warm-up and step-by-step instruction, and your first class is always free so you can try it with zero commitment.
What should I wear to my first class?
Just comfortable athletic clothes — shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard — and a water bottle. You don't need a gi for your first class; we can lend you one or you can train no-gi. Our starter offers include a gi to keep.
How often should I train as a beginner?
Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot for steady progress while your body adapts. Membership is unlimited gi and no-gi, so you can train as often as you like — most beginners build up gradually.
Is BJJ a good workout for adults?
Yes. BJJ builds full-body strength, cardio, mobility, and coordination while you learn a real skill — most people find it far more engaging than a regular gym session, and it doubles as practical self-defense.
Do I have to spar (roll) right away?
No. You learn and drill technique first, and live rolling is always optional and matched to your level. There's zero ego on our mats — experienced partners train with control and help you improve safely.
