Getting Started

The Belt System, Explained.

Adults in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu progress through five belts: white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Along the way you earn up to four stripes on each belt to mark progress. Promotions are based on mat time, understanding, and consistency, not on paying for a test. Here is how it works.

The adult belt order

  • White belt. Where everyone starts. The goal here is to learn to survive, escape, and understand the basic positions.
  • Blue belt. You have a real, working game and can hold your own in live training. This usually takes a couple of years of consistent training.
  • Purple belt. An advanced student with sharp technique and a personal style.
  • Brown belt. Refining and deepening. Close to mastery of the fundamentals.
  • Black belt. Years of dedicated training. A black belt can teach the art and has a complete, well-rounded game.

How stripes work

Between belts, coaches award stripes (small marks on the belt) to recognize steady progress. Most belts can hold up to four stripes before the next promotion. Think of them as checkpoints that say you are moving in the right direction.

How promotions actually happen

This is the part that surprises people coming from other martial arts. At a good BJJ gym, there are no paid belt tests and no fixed timeline. Promotions are earned through time on the mat, growing understanding, how you train, and consistency. Your coach is watching, and the belt comes when it comes.

Do not chase the belt

The healthiest mindset, and the one we encourage at Socius, is to forget about the belt and focus on showing up. Belts come with time and consistency. The students who obsess over rank tend to enjoy training less and quit sooner. The ones who fall in love with the process get promoted as a byproduct of just keeping at it.

Kids belts

Kids have their own colored belt system designed around their age and development, separate from the adult belts. It keeps young students motivated with achievable steps along the way.

Belts come with time on the mat. Step on it for the first time, free.
