The good news: you do not need to buy anything for your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. Comfortable workout clothes and a water bottle are all it takes. Here is the simple checklist so you show up ready and comfortable.
What to wear for your trial
Wear normal athletic clothes, the same kind you would wear to the gym:
- A t-shirt or rashguard. A snug athletic shirt is ideal. A regular cotton t-shirt is totally fine too.
- Shorts or leggings with no pockets, zippers, buttons, or metal. Those snag fingers and toes on the mat and can scratch your partner. Athletic shorts or leggings are perfect.
- Nothing loose or baggy that someone could get a finger caught in.
That is it. You do not need a gi (the kimono-style uniform) for your trial. If you decide to join through our 6-Week Challenge, a gi is included.
What to bring
- A water bottle. Training is a workout and you will want it.
- Flip-flops or sandals. We keep shoes off the mat for hygiene, so something easy to slip on and off for trips to the bathroom is handy.
- A towel if you tend to sweat a lot.
A few quick rules
- Trim your finger and toenails before you come. Short nails protect your training partners.
- Leave the jewelry at home. Rings, watches, necklaces, and earrings all come off before stepping on the mat.
- Come clean. Shower beforehand and wear fresh clothes. Basic hygiene keeps training pleasant for everyone.
- Arrive about ten minutes early so you can change, sign in, and meet the coach.
What you will want once you join
If you fall in love with it (most people do), you will eventually want your own gi for gi classes and a rashguard and shorts for no-gi. There is no rush. We will point you to reputable brands and the 6-Week Challenge gets you a gi to keep so you are set from day one.
